The Dorothea Hotel, a project of BDPST Real Estate Development, won recognition in the “Hotel Project of the Year” category at the Portfolio Property Awards ceremony held on Tuesday in Budapest. The event assessed the most outstanding domestic achievements, solutions, and developments of the year.

The Portfolio Property Awards were presented for the fourteenth time this year to acknowledge the most exceptional and defining real estate projects and transactions of 2023. A professional jury of seven members participated in selecting the winners, and the results were announced on Tuesday at a conference held at the Marriott Hotel, where BDPST Real Estate Development’s project, the Dorothea Hotel, received recognition in the Hotel Project of the Year category.

“Winning the Hotel Project of the Year award for us signifies not only the successful realization of the Dorothea Hotel but also the fruitful result of the persistent and creative work of the BDPST Group team. From designers to builders and all stakeholders involved, everyone contributed to making the Dorothea Hotel not just a building but an iconic complex born from a real estate development challenge in the heart of Budapest,” said Zoltán Kecskeméthy, Managing Director of BDPST Real Estate Development.

The five-star Dorothea Hotel, part of the global portfolio of Marriott Bonvoy Autograph Collection Hotels, opened its doors in November 2023 near Vörösmarty Square, featuring 216 guest rooms and several gastronomic units, evoking Hungary’s “golden age.” BDPST Real Estate Development’s project holds significant importance in 2023 not only for enhancing Budapest’s tourism services but also as one of the most complex real estate developments in recent years.

“The Dorothea Hotel is not just a hotel; it is a historical and modern masterpiece that has become a worthy member of the Autograph Collection Hotels’ global portfolio. The three buildings constructed in different eras – the ‘Weber House,’ the ‘Mahart Building,’ and the ‘Münnich House’ – enrich the hotel’s atmosphere with their unique historical and architectural values. For us, this project was not just about creating a building; it was about respectfully preserving and reviving the city’s cultural heritage. We are very grateful to the Portfolio Property Awards and the professional jury for recognizing the Dorothea project,” added István Szilágyi, Project Director of the Dorothea Project.

Designed by the renowned Italian architect and designer Piero Lissoni, the Dorothea Hotel pays homage to both history and modernity, with this blend recurring as a motif in its interior design elements and overall aesthetics. The three buildings were created in different periods: the ‘Weber House,’ designed by Antal Weber (1873); the ‘Mahart Building’ (1913), originally the headquarters of the Hungarian River and Sea Shipping Company in the Art Nouveau style; and the ‘Münnich House,’ designed by Aladár Münnich (1937), serving initially as the headquarters of Futura Rt., blending modernist and art deco elements. Throughout the development, in collaboration with local heritage authorities, the historical elements of each building were preserved and renovated, including the notable heritage staircase.
